The bad part of travelling is having to leave behind many great friends, people we care about and people we are going to miss loads. So as the departure date gets closer the time has come to organise a going away party. Not only is it a going away party, but its a celebration of the adventure we are about to begin. What better way to celebrate than surrounded by friends! So you are all invited to come and say a cheerful, (not adios only hasta luego), to us on Friday 7th September in Molly Malone´s Irish pub on Calle Manuela Malasaña, 11. We will be there waiting for you from 22.30 onwards......see you then!

  Friends from China

When I talk about our friends from China you are probably imagining an Asian couple, well that isnt the case. In fact our friends from China, as you can see from the photo, are indeed 100% Spanish, Bea and Barty. Bea born and bred here in Madrid and Barty, who although born further south in Arjona, didnt take long to move up to the big smoke once he met the love of his life. We all met last summer in a cute little hostal in Guilin, China. The friendship was sealed with numerous chinese beers in different parts of the country and a trek along the Great Wall of China. Once back in Madrid we met up again to relive our hols and have been doing so ever since. They are a great couple and never fail to surprise us. Their latest surprise was a very unexpected going away gift and also a very useful one, its what every traveller needs - A Survival Kit!!!!! Not just any old survival kit but a very well thought and personalised one, it contains everything from life saving injections (handy to be friends with a nurse:-) ), to paper underwear (just in case!), to handmade diaries, to batteries...the list is endless. As well as a great book by Sandra Canudas Maturana, called Manual de Una Vuelta al Mundo (Guide to Travelling the World) - I dont know where they found that as I have searched every bookstore in Madrid and Donegal and not been able to find one like that!! So this article is to say THANK YOU to our china friends, we really appreciate the presents and are going to miss you guys loads.

Amigos de China

Amigos desde que estuvimos en China: Si. Chinos?

The objective of the article is to explain briefly how to sign up to our Newsletter and how to use the Guestbook, as the instructions are all in French. It would have been handy to do this blog on an English site but the French one we are using is the most complete one we found, just a pity the instructions are all in french!! So let me guide you through it. Once you fill in your email address to sign up for our newsletter and click OK, the following box will appear:
newsletter.png

Visas, another important detail that should be on your "To Do" list before departing on any kind of trip. No one wants to run the risk of wasting money on a flight only to be refused entry into a country!!! I was once turned back from flying to America as my passport didnt have the required barcode, it wasnt fun let me tell you! The visas you need, if any, depend on the country your planning to visit,  here is my country by country visa guide. It took quite a few phonecalls and patience to get all this checked out so I hope it saves you some time. The following are visa requirements for European citizens.

Australia
Under 90 days - apply with your travel agent or online (
www.immi.gov.au) for a short holiday visa or electronic travel authority. Quick, easy and cheap to get.
Over 90 days -  need to apply (through the same channels) and demonstrate sufficient funds to cover your stay.
Working Visa - A 1 year working visa is also available to various nationalities, use it wisely as you are only allowed to apply for this once.

New Zealand
Under 30 days - No visa needed. The only requirment is to fill in a permit form which is given out on the inbound flights to New Zealand. This along with a valid passport is all you need.  However you may also be asked to prove you have sufficient funds to cover your planned stay. (copy of bank statement)

For the following countries no visa is required for a stay of up to 90 days:
Mexico
Guatemala
Costa Rica (90 days for French, 60 days for Irish....I reckon it should be the other way around?!)
Panama
Nicaragua
Honduras
El Salavador
Belize
Ecuador
Chile

As you can see I have a few more countries to check out yet so ill keep you posted!

http://www.aroundtheworlds.com/francais/saisons_liste.htm

It's not always easy to find out when to travel to each country as sometimes it's better to be somewhere during the summer, sometimes better to avoid the summer...you'll find interesting information in this web sites that list 109 countries...

We have decided to try something a bit different to introduce ourselves. I´ve written somethings that Antoine likes and dislikes and he has done the same for me. Hope it helps you get to know us better!

Enjoy!

Antoine.

Whos is Annemarie??

Likes and dislikes of Miss Toland...

She likes:

  • *Surprises (free fall jump from a plane at 13.000 ft or just a little nothing hidden under the pillow…).
  • *Sincerity in her relationships.
  • *Gossip!!!
  • *Sleeping with the duvet up over her head, covered like a ground hog…
  • *Gin, Beefeater, of course!
  • *The good feeling you experience after sport, even if she’ll never admit it… ;-)

She hates:

  • *When people tell her she speaks really good English for an Irish person…
  • *Having to say NO.
  • *Being far away from her family and friends in Ireland.
  • *The brain omelette I made her try once …
  • *The cold water I throw at her when she’s having a shower..

I’m sure I’ll discover new things about Annemarie’s hidden facet so I’ll update the list during the trip…

Antoine.

Hi all,

For those of you who dont know Antoine very well, here are some insights into his likes and dislikes. There are of course many more but Ive cut down the list to avoid boring you silly, and of course not all are for public viewing!

Antoine Likes:
o       Long lazy breakfasts at the weekend, consisting of jumbo cafes with sugar and peanut butter + jam on toast. (then he insists he doesnt have a sweet tooth ?!)
o       The idea of becoming a buddist and living in the mountains of Tibet!
o       Bicycles and ANYTHING to do with bicycles! (they all look the same to me?!)
o       Stripping off and taking a dip in any water he finds (be it minus degrees in the mountains or among Buffalo poo in China..lots of photos to prove this!)
o       Hiding anywhere possible to jump out and scare people.
o       Making little films in his head about how to make money! Some of them have worked :-)

Antoine Dislikes:
o       Cuore! (very intellectual magazine about famous people!)
o       Wet towels left on the bed (oops!!)
o       Doing nothing (he is definition of a culo inquieto!)
o       People touching his lips or ears. Hence its what i do when i want to annoy him :-)
o       TV sports – thank goodness for my sake!
o       His girlfriend getting drunk and calling him at 3am (as if ?!)
o       Films on cross atlantic iberia flights (has anyone seen The Bollywood Bride?)

Antoine is without a doubt one of the most caring and thoughtful people i know.

What people who dont know him well might think but that is not true - that he is very serious, when in fact I dont know anyone who likes to act the eejit more than him!

Well thats all for now folks!

The day we booked our tickets..........the day we made it definite that we were going to give up our jobs, leave our home, family, and friends, to head off into the world, with nothing except our backpacks and each other.  After this there was no going back!!!
